OVERVIEW
The VCD Publication is an annual publication commissioned by SAIC's Visual Communication Design department, showcasing the best works of graduating VCD students. Directed by Professor Mark Stammers (SAIC Visual Communication Design), the project highlights outstanding student achievements through a curated collection based on a concept developed by the designer. Selected through a competitive process, this project celebrates the creativity and innovation of the VCD department and serves as a significant contribution to its legacy.
Concept
The concept of the publication, "Light and Shadow," is conveyed through typography and reflective effects, symbolizing the interplay of light and shadow in real life. This relationship speaks to the artistic journey, where the messy underprint behind a great artwork reflects the constant ups and downs of life. The mysterious and grandeur, almost overwhelming nature of the design—with its dark color palette and focus on scale—serves as a reflection of nature itself: beautiful, yet beyond human control. At its heart, the publication aims to embrace a sense of comfort and celebration, offering a warm sendoff to all graduating designers as they embark on their next chapter.
