Breaking News is a board game where players take on the role of journalists chasing stories about the 2003 North American blackout, the largest blackout in the region's history. Players navigate key regions of the U.S., perform various actions to gather information, and compete to publish the most completed articles by the end of the game.
ROLE
The game’s core concept revolves around building stories layer by layer, reflecting the journalistic process of piecing together narratives. Players must strategize carefully, balancing limited actions, current locations, and the titles of their articles to maximize productivity by the end of each in-game day. This adds a layer of psychological pressure and complexity to the gameplay, mimicking the real-world challenges journalists face. As players move across regions affected by the blackout, they experience the challenge of gathering scattered information and crafting cohesive articles under time constraints, all while immersing themselves in the historical context of the incident.
